Railway stations are constantly moving. Thousands of passengers pass through each day, schedules change, and advertising campaigns need to stay current. Yet many transit advertisements still rely on printed posters that must be installed and replaced by hand.
E Ink and JR Tokai Agency are exploring a smarter approach.

Bringing Color ePaper to Tokyo Station
E Ink has announced a pilot program with JR Tokai Agency, an advertising company within the JR Central Group, to introduce full-color ePaper signage at Tokyo Station. The trial, scheduled to run through March 2027, will evaluate how ePaper can support the digital transformation of transit advertising while improving operational efficiency.
Powered by E Ink Spectra 6™, the signs combine vivid, full-color content with the paper-like appearance and ultra-low-power performance of ePaper.
The pilot includes commercially available displays installed at two locations:
- At the Yaesu South Exit: an AUO Display Plus 31.5-inch AecoPost and a Sharp A2-size ePoster
- At the Nihonbashi Exit: an AUO Display Plus 31.5-inch AecoPost
With nearly 100,000 people visiting the area each day, Tokyo Station provides a high-traffic environment for evaluating color ePaper in real-world railway advertising.
Digital Updates Without the Demands of Traditional Displays
Transit operators and advertising agencies are looking for new ways to respond to staffing shortages and the continued shift toward digital media. Conventional printed signs require teams to produce, deliver, install, and eventually discard each advertisement. Traditional digital displays can simplify updates, but they require continuous power.
ePaper offers another option. Content can be updated remotely, reducing the time and labor needed to replace printed posters. Because an E Ink display consumes power only when its image changes, it can continue showing an advertisement without drawing power to maintain it.
This gives transit organizations the flexibility of digital signage while helping reduce ongoing energy use, maintenance demands, and paper waste.
A More Sustainable Direction for Transit Media
The Tokyo Station pilot will help determine how color ePaper signage performs in a busy transportation environment and how it can support the future needs of railway advertisers. If the trial meets its objectives, JR Tokai Agency plans to accelerate its consideration of ePaper signage at additional stations.
As transportation networks modernize, ePaper can help make the passenger experience more connected while giving operators a practical, energy-efficient way to manage visual communications.
This pilot represents an important step toward a future where transit advertising is easier to update, more efficient to operate, and better aligned with sustainability goals.
