We’ve learned about how E Ink technology works, the benefits of using ePaper devices, and what makes up the display. Now, it’s time to explore the different settings where ePaper applications can be helpful. In this week’s New Inker Blog, I dive into how ePaper displays in healthcare settings can help not only make clinicians’ lives a little easier but also deliver better care to patients.

With ePaper devices that can connect to your hospital’s EHR/EMR system to make real time updates, long lasting battery lives, and that help achieve your hospital's sustainability goals, it’s an easy decision.

In the Patient’s Room

The last thing you see before walking into a patient's room is their door sign. What if there was a way that it could be reconfigured to show necessary information for hospital staff to see before they enter? ePaper patient room door signs are completely customizable so that clinicians can easily confirm information or see patient alerts. The installation process is the same as hanging up a picture, making the switch quick and easy. Because power is only used to update the display, it’s always on – even during power outages. Patient care signs are similar devices but are instead in the rooms, with features such as a nurse call button and response time stamps.

In most hospital rooms, there is a whiteboard on one of the walls with all the patient information. An ePaper patient communication board compiles this information into one cohesive display. It’s completely customizable, with no complex menus, and can show details such as care plans, what medications that patient is receiving, and any messages from the patient portal. These boards can also be set up to update automatically, meaning that the care team doesn’t need to physically update it like they would with a whiteboard. The board can also be easily sterilized, which is super helpful when there are new admissions.

Use case for healthcare providers and clinicians

For caregivers and clinicians who are constantly charting or writing things down, it can be useful to switch to an eNote – a digital notepad. They are extremely lightweight and won’t shatter when dropped like your typical tablet would. They allow for handwriting abilities with the benefit of digital document management, keeping all your papers organized and in one place. Like the communication boards, eNotes can be easily sterilized, so there’s no need to worry about the possibility of carrying any germs from room to room.

Smart badges are another great way to improve efficiency and reduce waste in hospitals. They are customizable as needed and can show a variety of information, both monochrome and in color. Power is only needed to update the badge, and none is needed to display the content. While the low power devices are already environmentally friendly, they are also reusable. Instead of having to create new badges and throw away old ones, simply update the display for the next user.
