When we talk about environmental impact, nothing is more straightforward than numbers to help us visualize the damage that has been done to the planet. 60 to 70 percent of the world’s ecosystems are [degrading](https://www.worldbank.org/en/topic/environment/overview#1) faster than they can recover; global energy-related carbon dioxide emissions [rose](https://www.iea.org/news/global-co2-emissions-rebounded-to-their-highest-level-in-history-in-2021) by 6% in 2021 to 36.3 billion tons; shipping waste [mounted](https://www.epa.gov/facts-and-figures-about-materials-waste-and-recycling/containers-and-packaging-product-specific) to 82.2 million tons; electronic waste [grew](https://unstats.un.org/sdgs/report/2020/The-Sustainable-Development-Goals-Report-2020.pdf) by 38% during the pandemic… These numbers emphasize the need for renewable energy and green solutions. Sustainability is no longer a buzzword. We are seeing a revolution in how products get designed, manufactured and distributed, with leading companies choosing to put sustainability at their core. At E Ink, sustainability is core to our mission, and each of the applications of our technology plays a part. **Display Technology Can Help Build and Maintain Green Ecosystems** As a reflective technology, E Ink’s displays can hold an image without power and can be driven with battery-less technologies or through solar panels. This reduces the consumption of environmental resources and energy. When incorporated into smart city signage or outdoor displays, digital paper technology offers an organic viewing experience without introducing bright light that disrupts the environment. And we can’t get there alone. That’s why E Ink [joined](https://www.eink.com/news.html?type=releasedetail&id=2589&year=2022&page=1) the Climate Pledge – to be part of a community committed to protecting the environment and global economy from the risks brought on by climate change. In 2019, Amazon co-founded the Climate Pledge, and, to date, there are over 300 signatories across 21 countries and 26 industries. Through collaborative efforts, companies will be able to advance progress toward achieving energy saving goals and accelerate the transition to a net zero economy. ![sustainbility-post-img3](https://blog.eink.com/hs-fs/hubfs/sustainbility-post-img3.jpg?width=571&name=sustainbility-post-img3.jpg) Additionally, E Ink [joined](https://www.theclimatepledge.com/content/amazonclimatepledge/us/en/Signatories/e_ink_holdings_inc.html) the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) to understand the best ways to align business objectives with climate science, with the goal of achieving 40 percent of renewable energy use by 2025, and 100 percent renewable energy use to implement the RE100 target by 2030. The global climate crisis is growing in urgency.
