E Ink. We Make Surfaces Smarter

Boston's Ink

A Look at the Integration of E Ink’s Technology across America’s Most Historic City

The year was 1997. Joseph Jacobson, Barrett Comiskey, JD Albert, Jerome Rubin, Russ Wilcox sat in the MIT Media Lab and began developing our first display solution: segmented displays. Boston is truly a mecca for tech on the east coast and we’re proud to have called Massachusetts our home in the US for decades.

WovenAs our technology has developed, we’ve built partnerships across local communities, from our “Woven Wall” installations at the Cambridge Innovation Center (CIC) to the various E Ink displays throughout the metro area.

One of our first partnerships was with Soofa, a Cambridge startup with the mission of integrating ePaper into interactive signage and architecture to enhance communities across the country. Today, you can find Soofa displays scattered throughout Boston, sporting the E Ink display. The Soofa signs are a digital community billboard that can showcase local artist, advertise events, and provide real time transportation information. soofa-BOS_Allston_venues

If you ever find yourself wandering through Fenway… Or on an adventure through the Seaport……Look for us!

The Soofa signs are not the only E Ink displays you’ll find in Boston. The MBTA has deployed a pilot test of E Ink displays on the green line. Solar-powered ePaper signage provides real-time transportation information as well as system alerts. The durable-solar-powered displays have the potential for further integration to bus and subway stops, which are energy efficient and don’t require a lot of maintenance.

The City of Boston wanted to preserve the historic architecture, but integrate a display to provide real-time information to help visitors navigate through the city. With our ePaper technology’s non-intrusive, paper-like appearance, we were able to blend the benefits of an always-on, easily updated display without overshadowing the historical design that Boston is known for.

We’ve partnered and deployed E Ink technology across Boston for the past two decades and look forward to the decades to come.
