Your Phone Shouldn't Be Your Alarm Clock

Posted by E Ink on 2021-10-28

The smartphone is a powerful tool, but they may be ruining our sleep. It’s hard to admit, but these days it can be a scary thought to have your phone out of reach. From work emails, to group chats and to social media, technology is the first thing you see in the morning and the last thing you see at night. It is ingrained into every aspect of our lives.

That said, your phone does not need to be a part of your nightly routine. Using your phone as an alarm is not only unnecessary, it can be harmful to your overall health and well-being.

Let’s take a look at benefits of a traditional alarm clock.

Switching Up Your Alarm Clock

Alarm clocks can be helpful for keeping sleep schedules regular. According to a study conducted by Salesforce, individuals with a longer average screen time were more likely to have poorer sleep quality and less sleep overall. Here are a few examples of how your smartphone negatively impacts your sleep quality:

  1. -  Smartphones keep your mind engaged which prolongs the ability to fall asleep.

    -  The Journal of Applied Physiology found that the blue light from your phone screen reduces melatonin level.

    -  Scrolling through your phone before bed creates emotions that prolong falling asleep, which consequently delays REM sleep.

Mudita Harmony

Mudita is a new kind of technology company that designs solutions for the future of humankind. Mental and physical health is treated as a crucial design aspect, rather than an afterthought. When it comes to improving sleep quality, consistency is key. Establishing a habit of waking up and going to bed without our phones optimizes our circadian rhythms, the internal biological clocks, and adapts our bodies to better perform tasks at certain hours.

Creating a Natural Display

The E Ink display is a key element of the Mudita Harmony. It has all the benefits of the E Ink digital paper that you know and love: sharp resolution and a paperlike appearance give it readability and an organic feel.

The display also has a front light that minimizes the harmful blue light that can disturb your sleep. If it is one of those nights when you wake up to check the time - the gentle and warm front light is customized for minimal disturbance to your sleeping cycles.
